Patong Beach: The Truth About Phuket's Main Resort
Patong is Phuket's most famous and most controversial resort. This is where Bangla Road's nightlife blazes, restaurants cater to every budget, the beach stretches 3 km, and the Jungceylon mall sits at the centre. It's also where you'll find murky water, crowds, pushy vendors, and questionable massage parlours. I visit Patong often but have never stayed more than two days. Here's an honest take — what's good, what's bad, and whether you should go.
What Patong actually is
Patong is a town and beach on Phuket's west coast, 15 kilometres from Phuket Town. The main road — Beach Road — runs along the seafront; parallel to it are Rat-U-Thit Road (where Jungceylon is) and Soi Bangla — the heart of the nightlife.
The town has about 30,000 residents, plus 30-50 thousand tourists daily during high season. Think of it as "mini Pattaya." Thai workers from other provinces come here to staff the restaurants, nightclubs, and hotels.
The beach itself
Length — about 3 kilometres; medium-grain yellow sand. Sunbeds are free with a drink purchase (from 100 THB for a beer). Parasailing, jet skis, banana boats — all paid, starting at 800 THB per ride.
The sea... let's be honest. In high season it's acceptable — you can wade in, visibility is 2-3 metres. In low season expect waves and red flags. Year-round the water is somewhat murky (natural fine sand + heavy activity). For clear water, head to Karon or Surin.

Bangla Road — the main attraction
If you go to Patong, go for this. Soi Bangla is a 350-metre pedestrian street that opens at 6 PM and runs until 4 AM. Both sides are lined with clubs, go-go bars, live-music venues, shows, and street food.
The atmosphere is hard to convey: thousands of people, neon lights, music blasting from dozens of venues at once, elephants brought for photo-ops (illegally — don't encourage it). You should see it once. More visits are an acquired taste.

Patong has food for every budget. From street stalls with pad thai for 80 THB to Acqua restaurant with Italian cuisine and steaks at 3,000 THB. An average dinner for two at a decent place runs 600-1,000 THB.
When to visit Patong and when to skip it
If you have a 5-7 day holiday and want to try everything — Patong works. Stay here for 3 days, then move to a quieter area (Karon, Kata, Nai Harn). This is the ideal combo for a first trip.

Patong is worth 2-3 nights. One evening on Bangla Road, one dinner at Acqua, one excursion from the local pier — and you can leave. Staying longer is a strain on your nervous system.
