Night Markets in Phuket: Where, When, and What to Try

Night market in Phuket: rows of food stalls, lanterns, and crowds of visitors

Night markets are worth coming to Phuket for even if you don't like beaches. I've lived on the island over four years and still go to markets every week: for the food, the atmosphere, the feeling of real Thailand. There are no English menus and inflated prices here -- just fresh food, live music, and hundreds of lights overhead. In this article -- four main night markets with schedules, prices, and personal recommendations.

1. Chillva Market -- The Most Local

Chillva Market is on Yaowarat Road in Phuket Town. Open Tuesday-Saturday, 17:00-23:00. Set up in shipping containers with food stalls between them.

My favorites: Roti with fillings -- thin flatbread with banana and Nutella (40-60 baht). Coconut ice cream served in a coconut shell with peanuts and sticky rice (50-70 baht). Seafood skewers -- grilled shrimp, squid, octopus with spicy sauce (30-60 baht each). Pad Thai cooked in a wok right before you (50-80 baht).

Tip: arrive at 18:00. Bring cash -- almost nobody takes cards. 500 baht for food is more than enough.

2. Naka Weekend Market -- The Biggest

On Chao Fa West Road, near Central Floresta. Saturday-Sunday only, 16:00-23:00. The biggest night market in Phuket -- hundreds of stalls across a huge area.

Highlights: Tiger prawns on the grill -- palm-sized, charcoal-grilled (200-400 baht). Mango with sticky rice -- a classic Thai dessert (80-100 baht). Deep-fried ice cream -- ice cream ball fried in tempura (60-80 baht). Crab in egg curry cooked fresh before you (300-500 baht).

Bargaining on clothing/souvenirs is expected -- start at 50% of asking price. Bring 1,000-2,000 baht if you want food plus souvenirs.

3. Sunday Walking Street -- The Most Atmospheric

Every Sunday, Thalang Road in Old Town becomes a pedestrian market. 16:00-22:00. My favorite on the island -- it combines food, art, and the incredible atmosphere of the old Sino-Portuguese town.

Try: Hokkien Mee -- Phuket's signature noodle in thick pork broth (60-80 baht). O-Taw -- crispy taro cake with egg, a purely Phuket dish (40-60 baht). Dim sum -- steamed and fried, with shrimp and pork (40-60 baht). Plus handmade silver jewelry (300-800 baht) and paintings by local artists.

Tip: arrive at 17:00 -- still light enough to photograph the beautiful Old Town architecture, then transition to food.

4. Malin Plaza -- Patong's Market

On Soi Bangla, central Patong. Open daily 17:00-23:30. The only one you can walk to from your Patong hotel.

Most touristy of the four but still good: seafood on ice -- pick shrimp, crab, fish and they grill or wok it (200-500 baht). Satay -- chicken or pork skewers in peanut sauce (10-20 baht each). Pad Krapao -- minced pork with basil and chili on rice (60-80 baht).

Practical Tips

Cash is mandatory. 95% of vendors don't accept cards. ATMs are nearby but charge 220 baht commission. Withdraw in advance or use exchange booths.

Come hungry. Seriously. There are so many temptations that you'll regret eating before the market.

Dress light. Markets are hot, humid, and crowded. Shorts, t-shirt, comfortable shoes. Umbrella or rain poncho in rainy season (May-October) is a must.

Try the street food fearlessly. Market food in Phuket is safe. Everything is cooked in front of you over high flame. Choose stalls with queues of Thai locals -- the best quality indicator. In 4 years in Phuket I've never gotten food poisoning at a market.
