Bang Tao Beach: 6 Kilometres of Luxury

Bang Tao Beach in Phuket — long beach and Laguna resort hotels

Bang Tao is not just a beach; it is an ecosystem. Six kilometres of uninterrupted sand, the Laguna Phuket complex with seven five-star hotels, an 18-hole golf course, dozens of restaurants, and Boat Avenue, the best shopping street outside Patong. If your budget starts at 8,000 THB per night and you want space, peace, and luxury, Bang Tao was made for you. If your budget is more modest, there are still options, and I will cover those too. Full ranking in the best beaches of Phuket review.

My Personal Experience

Bang Tao is the beach I show guests when I want to make an impression. Six kilometres of sand is so much that even at peak season you can walk to the central section and be alone. My favourite routine is a morning run along the waterline from Laguna to Layan and back (12 km). Early morning, the sun still low, fishermen hauling in their nets: it feels like you are on some wild beach in Sri Lanka rather than next to five-star hotels.

If you ask me where I would live on Phuket if money were no object, the answer is Bang Tao or Cherngtalay. Everything you need for a full life is here: international schools (BISP, UWC), Villa Market with European products, good restaurants, gyms, golf. And six kilometres of beach on your doorstep. For anyone considering property or long-term rental, this area is worth exploring first.

Beach Description

Bang Tao is Phuket's longest beach. Six kilometres of sand stretch from the headland near Surin (to the south) all the way to Layan Beach (to the north). That is twice the length of Karon and seven times the length of Surin.

The sand is fine, golden, and firm. You can run along the waterline (many people use the beach as a morning running track: 12 km round trip). Width is 20-40 metres depending on the tide.

The beach is not uniform. The southern part (near Laguna) is well-maintained with hotel loungers and restaurants. The central section is wilder, with casuarina trees and local fishermen. The northern end (Layan) is nearly deserted; you can have a kilometre-long stretch entirely to yourself.

The entry into the water is gentle and depth increases slowly: 50 metres from shore it is still only waist-deep. This makes Bang Tao safe for children. Waves are moderate even in shoulder months because the bay is sheltered by the shape of the coastline.

A distinctive feature is the lagoon behind the beach. Former tin-mining quarries have become picturesque lakes, around which Laguna Phuket is built. Canals connect the hotels, with shuttle boats running between them (free for guests).

Infrastructure

Bang Tao divides into two zones: the Laguna Complex (to the south) and Cherngtalay/Boat Avenue (inland).

Laguna Phuket is a mini-city: 7 hotels, 30+ restaurants, the Laguna Golf course (green fee 4,500 THB), spa centres, gyms, tennis courts, and kids' clubs. The grounds cover 600 hectares. A free shuttle (bus every 15 minutes) and boats on the canals connect the hotels.

Boat Avenue is a dining and shopping street 5 minutes from the beach. Villa Market (imports: cheeses, wine, Italian products), cafes, boutiques, and a beauty salon. On Sundays there is the Canal Market (17:00-22:00): street food, music, and a family atmosphere.

Golf: Laguna Golf Club has 18 holes, designed by Paul Jansen. Green fee is 4,500 THB (Laguna guests get a 30% discount). Blue Canyon Country Club is 20 minutes north with two championship-level courses (6,500 THB).

For children: a Kids' Club at every Laguna hotel (free for guests, ages 3-12). Porto de Phuket is a small mall with a play area. The Sunday Canal Market has entertainers and bouncy castles.

Healthcare: Bangkok Hospital Siriroj is 20 minutes away. On Boat Avenue there is a dental and cosmetic clinic.

Where to Eat

Bang Tao is a foodie neighbourhood. Thanks to the expat community, world cuisines are well represented.

Where to Stay

Mid-range: Cassia Phuket (3,500-6,000 THB/night)

A modern loft-style hotel inside Laguna. Apartments with kitchens, convenient for families. Access to all Laguna facilities (pools, shuttles, beach). The best value for money within the complex.

Premium: Anantara Layan (8,000-18,000 THB/night)

On the quiet northern end of the beach. Villas with private pools, a cliffside restaurant, and a beachfront spa. Layan Beach is nearly private. For couples and those seeking seclusion within comfort.

Luxury: Banyan Tree Phuket (15,000-60,000 THB/night)

Laguna's flagship. Every room is a villa with a pool. A world-class spa (the renowned Banyan Tree Spa). Two restaurants, golf, and yachts. For those to whom "five stars" is not a price category but an expectation.

How to Get There

From the airport: taxi is 500-700 THB (20-25 minutes). This is one of the closest beaches to the airport, a huge plus after a long flight. Laguna hotels provide transfers (1,000-1,500 THB or free when booking a suite).

From Patong: 25-30 minutes by car via Kamala and Surin. Grab/Bolt is 400-500 THB (Bolt from Patong to Bang Tao is usually 350-450 THB). By scooter it is 25 minutes on a scenic road. For shared rides, use the fellow travellers service.

Parking: at beach entrances on the Laguna side there is free parking for resort guests. For everyone else there is parking at the main public entrance (free, 30-40 car spaces, 50+ scooter spaces). At Boat Avenue parking is paid (20 THB/hour for cars, scooters free). Overall, parking at Bang Tao is not a problem; the beach is long with many access points.

To Surin: 5 minutes south. You can walk along the beach in 15 minutes.

Within Laguna: a free shuttle bus between hotels (every 15 minutes, 7:00-23:00). Boats on the canals. Bicycles can be rented on-site (free at most hotels).

Best Time to Visit

High season (November-April): ideal (weather by month). Calm sea, daily sunshine. Bang Tao is buzzing: Canal Market, hotel events, golf tournaments. Book Laguna a month ahead; in December-January occupancy is 95%.

Shoulder months (May, October): excellent time. Rain lasts 1-2 hours a day (usually evening), swimming is fine, prices drop by 30%. Laguna runs promotional packages with spa treatments and dinners.

Low season (June-September): Bang Tao is one of the best low-season choices. The beach is long, waves are moderate (safer than Surin), and hotels operate at full capacity. Prices drop 40-50%. Golf and restaurants run year-round.

For winter stays (3+ months): Bang Tao/Cherngtalay is one of the best areas. Rental villas from 30,000 THB/month (2-3 bedrooms). An expat community, international schools nearby (BISP, UWC), real estate, and Boat Avenue for daily needs.

Who Bang Tao Is Best For

Families with children: one of Phuket's best beaches. Gentle entry, long beach, kids' clubs at Laguna hotels, pools, and entertainment. Ideal for families with a budget of 5,000+ THB/night.

Golfers: two world-class courses (Laguna Golf and Blue Canyon) within 20 minutes of each other. Nowhere else on Phuket offers this.

Winter residents and expats: the best area on the island for long-term living. International schools, Villa Market, excursions nearby, and proximity to the airport. Many families from Europe and further afield choose Cherngtalay/Bang Tao for wintering.

Budget travellers: tough. The area targets the luxury segment, and even budget options here cost more than mid-range at Karon.

Party-goers: no. There is no nightlife; Patong is 25 minutes away. Beach clubs are on neighbouring Surin.
