Kamala Beach: The Quiet Middle Ground Between Patong and Surin

Kamala Beach in Phuket — quiet bay and palm trees

Kamala is a beach that people discover on their second trip to Phuket. The first time, everyone heads to Patong or Karon. On the second visit they find Kamala and wonder how they missed it. A quiet, long bay with golden sand, free of crowds and pushy vendors. Yet Patong is just 15 minutes away if you need some buzz. For couples seeking a balance between peace and accessibility, it is the perfect choice. Full overview in the best beaches of Phuket article.

My Personal Experience

Kamala became the place I go when I want to be in Thailand rather than in "resort Phuket." The first time I ended up here by accident: I was riding my scooter from Patong to Surin and decided to stop. I sat down at a beachfront restaurant, ordered grilled fish for 200 baht, and stayed for three hours watching the sea. That was when I realised Kamala is a working village where locals live their own lives, and tourists are a pleasant addition, not the centre of the universe.

I often recommend Kamala to couples visiting Phuket for the first time who are worried about Patong's noise but do not want to end up "in the sticks." The balance here is perfect: you can dine quietly under palm trees in the evening, then be on Bangla Road 15 minutes later by scooter if you fancy some action. If you need transport or excursions, get in touch and we will help organise everything.

Beach Description

Kamala is on Phuket's west coast, between Patong (to the south) and Surin (to the north). The beach is about 2 kilometres long, crescent-shaped. The sand is golden, medium-grained, and pleasant for walking barefoot.

The key difference from its neighbours is that there are far fewer people. Even in high season you can find a stretch of beach with no one within 50 metres. For comparison, that is impossible at Karon in December-January.

The entry into the water is gentle, though depth increases faster than at Karon. After 20-30 metres from shore it is already chest-deep. The water is clean, especially in the northern part of the beach closer to Surin.

In the centre of the beach several palm trees provide free shade. Sun loungers are available from beachfront restaurants at 200 THB/day or free with an order of at least 100 THB.

At the southern end of the beach is a small fishing village with longtail boats. Here you can arrange a boat trip (1,000-1,500 THB for a boat for 1-2 hours) or buy fresh fish directly from the fishermen in the morning (from 6:00).

Infrastructure

Kamala's infrastructure is more modest than Karon or Patong, but everything you need is here. Along the beachfront road (Kamala Beach Road) there are restaurants, mini-markets, several pharmacies, and ATMs. One 7-Eleven in the centre and another at the southern entrance.

Kamala is a Muslim village, and you can feel it: it is quieter here, with fewer bars and more mosques. The locals are friendly but more conservative than in Patong. Avoid walking through the village in a swimsuit (on the beach it is fine).

Carnival Magic (formerly Phuket FantaSea) is the area's main attraction. A spectacular show with Thai cultural elements, elephants, and acrobats, plus a buffet. It runs every evening from 17:30. Adult ticket is 2,500 THB. It is one of Phuket's most visited attractions and worth seeing once.

Massage parlours: 5-6 on the beach road. Thai massage is 300 THB/hour, oil massage 500 THB. Good quality without the hard sell.

Scooter rental: 250-300 THB/day. Without a scooter it is harder here than at Karon because the infrastructure is spread out. Grab works, but drivers are scarce with waits of 5-10 minutes.

Where to Eat

Fewer restaurants than Karon, but the quality is on par. Fresh seafood predominates.

Where to Stay

Budget: Kamala Dreams (900-1,800 THB/night)

A small guesthouse five minutes from the beach. Clean rooms with balcony, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. Run by a Thai family who help with scooter rental and excursions. A quiet spot for those not looking for a resort.

Mid-range: Cape Sienna Hotel (3,000-6,000 THB/night)

Premium: InterContinental Phuket Resort (8,000-20,000 THB/night)

A luxury resort on Kamala's northern edge, near Surin. A private stretch of beach, multiple pools, 4 restaurants, and a spa with ocean views. For those who want premium without the pretentiousness of Bang Tao.

How to Get There

From the airport: taxi is 700-900 THB (35-40 minutes), minibus is 180 THB (1-1.5 hours). Kamala is closer to the airport than Karon or Kata, which is a plus. You can also find fellow travellers to share transfer costs.

From Patong: 15 minutes by scooter or car over the hill. Tuk-tuk is 400 THB, Grab/Bolt is 200-300 THB (Bolt from Patong to Kamala is usually 200-250 THB). The road is scenic, with sea views from the pass.

Parking: free motorbike parking along Kamala Beach Road with plenty of spaces even in season. For cars there is a small lot at the main beach entrance (free, 15-20 spaces) and another near the fishing village to the south. Parking is not a problem at Kamala, unlike Patong.

To Surin: 10 minutes north. Tuk-tuk is 300 THB, scooter is 7 minutes along the coast.

To Phuket Town: 30-35 minutes by car, Grab is 400-500 THB. Local buses do not run here; taxis or scooters only.

Best Time to Visit

High season (November-April): ideal conditions. Calm sea, sunshine, sunsets every evening. Fewer people than Karon, even during peak months. Book hotels 2-3 weeks in advance.

Shoulder months (May, October): excellent time. Rain is brief, prices drop by 25-35%, the beach is half-empty. Swimming is possible most days.

Low season (June-September): waves and red flags are more frequent than at Karon (due to the open bay). But for those not tied to swimming it is a great time: cheap, quiet, green hills. Carnival Magic runs year-round. More on weather by month in a separate article.

Who Kamala Is Best For

Couples: ideal. Peace, romantic seaside restaurants, beautiful sunsets, yet no isolation. Many couples I advise end up choosing Kamala.

Families with children: good in high season. Gentle entry, few people, Carnival Magic nearby for evening entertainment. In low season, waves can be strong and it is better to choose Karon or Bang Tao.

Party-goers: no. Kamala has 2-3 bars and that is all. For nightlife, it is 15 minutes to Patong.

Surfers: partially. Waves do occur, but conditions are worse than at Kata and currents more dangerous. For surfing, Kata is the better choice.

Long-term residents: a good option for budget-conscious winter residents. Accommodation is cheaper than Surin or Bang Tao, both of which are 10 minutes away by scooter.
