Karon Beach: The Most Versatile Beach in Phuket
Karon Beach is 3 kilometres of golden "singing" sand on Phuket's west coast. If you are flying to Thailand for the first time and want a beach that works for everyone, from toddlers to elderly parents, Karon is the right choice. There is none of Patong's madness, but all the essential infrastructure is here: restaurants, 7-Elevens, pharmacies, taxis. I have been living in Phuket for over four years and recommend Karon to every other person who asks "where should I go for the first time?" Full ranking in the best beaches of Phuket article.
My Personal Experience
Karon was my first beach in Phuket. I settled here when I first moved and lived for four months. I remember the first impression: walking out in the morning, the sand squeaking underfoot (that famous quartz "singing" sand), three kilometres of empty shore ahead, and not a single pushy vendor. After a Moscow February it felt like paradise. Over four months I explored every corner of the area, found the best street food stalls (a lady near the southern 7-Eleven makes the best pad Thai for 70 baht), learned to bargain with tuk-tuk drivers, and understood the main thing: Karon is a beach with no surprises, and sometimes that is exactly what you need.
Today I visit Karon 2-3 times a month, usually for dinner at the night market or to meet guests who chose this area. If you ask me where in Phuket it is easiest to "just relax" without worrying about logistics, my answer is Karon. Everything is to hand, everything works, and nothing needs organising. Beach Description
Karon sits between Patong (15 minutes north) and Kata (5 minutes south). The beach stretches nearly 3 kilometres, making it one of the longest on the island. The sand here is distinctive: coarse-grained, golden, and it literally "sings" underfoot, squeaking as you walk thanks to its quartz content.

The beach strip is 30-50 metres wide depending on the season and location. In high season (November-April) the sea is calm and the water far clearer than at Patong. Visibility is 3-5 metres; you can even snorkel near the southern rocks. In low season (May-October) waves appear, sometimes serious ones, and red flags go up regularly.
The entry into the water is gentle, with a gradual depth increase: a plus for families with children. There are no pushy beach vendors (unlike Patong), and sun loungers are available for 200 THB/day or free with a drink order at a beachfront restaurant.
Near the southern part of the beach is the Karon Viewpoint (also called Three Beaches Viewpoint), one of Phuket's most photographed spots. From it you can see three beaches at once: Karon, Kata, and Kata Noi. It is a 5-minute ride by scooter. By the way, if you are looking for fellow travellers for viewpoint trips or island excursions, it is a great way to save money.
Infrastructure
Karon is a fully fledged resort village. Along the main road, Patak Road, you will find dozens of restaurants, massage parlours, laundries, pharmacies, currency exchange offices, and ATMs. There are two 7-Elevens, mini-markets, clothing shops, and souvenir stores.
On Karon Plaza (a small square in the centre) there are several bars, evening lighting, and live music at weekends. It is not Bangla Road, but for a quiet evening beer it is enough.
Healthcare: the nearest major hospital is Bangkok Hospital Phuket (20 minutes by car), but Karon has several clinics for minor issues. Pharmacies are open until 22:00 and sell almost everything over the counter.
Transport: tuk-tuks to Patong cost 300-400 THB, to Kata 200 THB. Grab works but there are fewer cars than in Patong. Scooter rental is 250-350 THB/day. If you plan to get around a lot, a scooter is essential.
Karon has a long beachfront promenade for jogging and walks. There are public showers and toilets (free) at several points along the beach. Motorbike parking near the beach is free.
Where to Eat
Food at Karon suits every budget and is on average 10-15% cheaper than Patong.

Best Time to Visit
High season (November-April): ideal conditions. Calm sea, daily sunshine, 28-32 C. Downside: lots of tourists, especially package holidaymakers in December-February. Hotels are 80-95% full; book a month ahead.
Shoulder months (May, October): the sweet spot. Rain is not yet/no longer every day, fewer tourists, prices drop by 20-30%. Swimming is possible but keep an eye on the flags.
Low season (June-September): daily rain (usually 1-2 hours after lunch), big waves, some restaurants closed. But accommodation prices drop by 40-50%, the beach is empty, and you can ride the waves. Great for budget travellers and winter residents.
Who Karon Is Best For
Families with children: one of the best options in Phuket. Gentle entry, wide beach, pharmacies and shops nearby, hotels with kids' clubs (Centara). Only Bang Tao is better, but it is significantly more expensive.
Couples: good if you are looking for a quiet, no-frills holiday. For romance with views and designer hotels, Surin or Kata are better.
Budget travellers: excellent. Accommodation from 800 baht, street food from 60 baht, everything within walking distance. Karon is the most affordable of Phuket's "decent" beaches.
Party-goers: no. For nightlife head to Patong, 15 minutes away.
Surfers: partially. Low-season waves do appear but conditions are not as good as at Kata.
