Cost of Living in Phuket in 2026 — Full Budget Breakdown

Cost of living in Phuket: island views and everyday expenses

Hey there! I'm Vitaly, and I've been living in Phuket for several years now. One question I get asked over and over is: "How much money do you need per month to live comfortably on the island?" The answer depends on your lifestyle, but I'll try to give you the most honest picture with real numbers for 2026. No sugar-coating and no scare tactics.

A quick note: all prices are current as of May 2026. The exchange rate fluctuates, so I'll give amounts in both THB and USD. For reference, I'm using an average rate of 1 USD = 35 THB. You can always check the current rate on our currency exchange page.

Housing: from a studio to a villa with a pool

Housing is the biggest expense, and the price range is enormous. I'll break it down into three categories.

Budget option: 8,000 - 12,000 THB/month (~$230 - $340)

This gets you a studio or a room in a condominium without a pool. These are typically found in Chalong, Rawai or Kathu — farther from the beach. Expect 25-35 sq m, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and basic furniture. Hot water isn't always included, but in the tropics that's hardly a deal-breaker. Deposit is usually 2 months' rent.

Mid-range: 15,000 - 25,000 THB/month (~$430 - $710)

A one-bedroom apartment or a nice studio in a condo with a pool, gym, and secure parking. Areas: Bang Tao, Surin, Kamala. 5-15 minutes to the beach by motorbike. 40-60 sq m, full kitchen, washing machine. This is the most popular option among long-term visitors and remote workers.

Comfort level: 40,000 - 80,000 THB/month (~$1,140 - $2,280)

A villa with 2-3 bedrooms and a private pool, or spacious apartments in a premium condo. For more details on villas and what to look out for, check out our article on villa rental in Phuket. At this level, a family with kids can live in total comfort.

Utilities are a separate story. Electricity costs 5-8 THB/kWh (condos may charge more than the government rate). With air conditioning, expect 1,500 - 4,000 THB/month for electricity. Water is 200-500 THB/month. Internet is often included in the rent; if not, fiber optic starts at 500 THB/month.

Transport: motorbike, car or taxi

Getting around Phuket without your own transport is tough — public transit is practically nonexistent. I covered all the options in detail in my article about public transport in Phuket, but here's the cost breakdown.

Motorbike (scooter)

Rental: 3,000 - 5,000 THB/month (~$85 - $140) for a Honda Click or PCX. Fuel runs about 800-1,200 THB/month with regular riding. Total: 4,000 - 6,000 THB/month. This is the most popular and economical option.

Car

Rental: 12,000 - 18,000 THB/month for a Toyota Yaris or similar. A pickup or SUV starts at 20,000 THB. Fuel: 3,000 - 5,000 THB/month. More details on vehicle rental. Total with fuel: 15,000 - 25,000 THB/month.

Taxis and Bolt

Bolt (a local Uber alternative) — a ride across the island costs 150-400 THB. If you ride every day, it'll end up costing more than renting a car. Great as a supplement, but not as your main transport.

Food: from street stalls to restaurants

Food in Thailand is a joy in itself, and it's noticeably cheaper than in Western countries. Especially if you eat local.

Street food stalls

Pad Thai, fried rice, noodle soup — 40-60 THB per dish (~$1.10-$1.70). That's a full meal. Fresh fruit starts at 20 THB per kg of mango in season. For more on where to find the best street food, check out our dedicated article.

Cafes and food courts

Lunch at a regular Thai cafe: 80-150 THB. Food court at a mall (Central, Jungceylon): 100-200 THB. Coffee at Starbucks: 120-180 THB; at a local cafe: 60-90 THB.

Restaurants

European or Japanese cuisine: 300-600 THB per dish. Dinner with wine for two at a nice restaurant: 2,000 - 4,000 THB.

Cooking at home

Groceries at Makro, Lotus's or Big C are significantly cheaper than tourist-area shops. Chicken: 70-90 THB/kg, pork: 120-180 THB/kg, 5 kg rice: 100-150 THB. If you cook at home, food costs 8,000 - 12,000 THB/month for one person.

Dining option Cost per meal Monthly (1 person)
Street food stalls 40-60 THB 6,000-9,000 THB
Thai cafes + food courts 100-200 THB 9,000-15,000 THB
Restaurants (European/Japanese) 300-600 THB 18,000-30,000 THB
Cooking at home (groceries) 50-100 THB 8,000-12,000 THB

A few important details

Visa and related costs

Don't forget to budget for your visa. A 60-day tourist visa is free on arrival (for many nationalities in 2026), but if you plan to stay longer you'll need an ED visa, work permit, or visa run. That's an extra 3,000 - 15,000 THB depending on the type. More details in our up-to-date 2026 visa guide.

Seasonal pricing

During high season (November-March), rental prices go up by 20-40%. Many landlords set a minimum lease of 1 month. In low season, you can negotiate and get discounts of up to 30%.

Couple vs solo

Living as a couple isn't twice as expensive. Housing stays the same, transport is one bike for two, utilities barely change. Realistically, it's a 1.4-1.6x multiplier on a single person's budget.

Hidden costs

Housing deposit (1-2 months), motorbike deposit (usually 1 month), SIM card, household essentials — budget 15,000-25,000 THB for one-time setup costs.

My personal advice

If you're coming to Phuket for the first time for an extended stay, start with the "mid-range" budget — around 50,000-60,000 THB per month. That's enough for a comfortable life without penny-pinching. You'll live in a decent condo with a pool, ride a motorbike, eat at both Thai cafes and the occasional restaurant, get massages, and go on excursions.

The budget option at 28,000 - 35,000 THB also works, but it requires discipline: cooking at home, limiting restaurant visits and taxis. Even so, at this level you're living in the tropics, swimming in the sea every day, and enjoying Thai cuisine.

The comfort level is a full family lifestyle with a villa, car, and all the perks. And even that costs less than a comparable lifestyle in most major Western cities.
