James Bond Island: The Truth About Phuket's Most Hyped Excursion
James Bond Island is the Khao Phing Kan rock in Phang Nga National Park, 70 kilometers north of Phuket. It's famous from the film "The Man with the Golden Gun" (1974). A tour in 2026 costs from 1,600 THB by speedboat or from 1,100 THB on a big boat. The trip takes 7–9 hours. I've been five times — for work and with guests. I'll tell you honestly what's great about this excursion, and where it's seriously overrated.
What is Phang Nga Bay and what Bond has to do with it
Phang Nga is a national marine park covering 400 km², dotted with limestone rocks jutting straight out of the water. Geologically it's similar to Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, but more compact.
The most famous rock — Khao Phing Kan — became "James Bond Island" after the 1974 film finale with Roger Moore was shot there. Since then it's been called James Bond Island, and every day about 2,000 tourists are brought there. On the island itself stands the famous Ko Tapu rock — a 20-meter needle sticking out of the sea.
You don't actually step onto the island — you just look at it from a neighboring beach about 200 meters away. So the entire "Bond Island tour" is basically 30 minutes of photos from a distance.

Big boat vs speedboat: which to choose
I've done both. Each format has its merits.
Big boat — if you're going for the experience, not racing the clock
This is a wooden double-decker boat for about 60 people. Goes slowly — 1.5 hours one way. But no rocking, you can lie on mattresses on the upper deck, lunch is cooked on board. The route includes kayaking through Hong caves (which is, in my opinion, the best part of the whole trip), the floating village Ko Panyi, Bond Island, and a beach somewhere at sunset.
Downside: the boat is big, slow, and almost always packed. If there are 60 of you, lunch happens in three shifts.
Speedboat — if you have the budget and want a tighter experience
Smaller group (15–20 people), the entire route is covered twice as fast. You can fit in Monkey Island (Ko Hujar) or Samet Nangshe viewpoint as a bonus. But it's seriously bumpy — in waves over 1 meter it gets uncomfortable. If you get seasick, take the big boat.

I'll say something controversial: the James Bond Island tour is probably the most overrated trip from Phuket. The island itself you see for 30 minutes from another beach, the crowd is massive, Ko Tapu rock is small — not like in the edited photos.
But! If you forget about Bond itself and evaluate the trip as a whole, it's worth it. Kayaking through Phang Nga caves is genuinely amazing. Ko Panyi, the village on stilts, is an ethnographic adventure. The bay scenery with its rocks is the best nature you'll find around Phuket.
So I recommend going to Phang Nga, but not for James Bond Island — for the bay as a whole. And don't make it your first excursion — after the Similans and Phi Phi, Bond will likely disappoint.
Pro tip: an alternative to the standard tour
If you've already seen Bond before or want something non-standard — there are private longtail boat trips directly from Ao Po pier. Renting a longtail for the day costs 4,500 THB per boat (up to 6 people). You create your own route: kayaking through caves, Panyi village, you can even reach the mainland cliffs.
It works out cheaper than a group tour for 4 people, the route is flexible, no crowds. I took friends this way once — they were thrilled.
If you want something fundamentally different — check out Khao Sok and Cheow Lan Lake: jungle instead of sea, floating bungalows, a complete change of scenery.
