Phuket or Samui — Where to Go in 2026? Honest Comparison

Comparing Phuket and Samui: beaches, nature and infrastructure of both islands

Hey there! I'm Vitaly, and I've been living in Phuket for several years now — but before that, I spent quite a bit of time on Samui as well. "Phuket or Samui?" is one of the most common questions I get. Let's break it down honestly, without picking favorites. Both islands have their strengths, and the "better" one depends entirely on what you're looking for in a vacation.

Quick comparison: 8 criteria at a glance

Criteria Phuket Samui
Beaches 30+ beaches, great variety 10-12 beaches, intimate vibe
Prices Slightly lower due to competition 10-20% more expensive
Flights International airport, direct flights Private Bangkok Airways airport, pricier
Infrastructure Malls, hospitals, schools More modest, basic
Nightlife Patong — large scale Chaweng — compact
Atmosphere Dynamic, urban + beach Relaxed, island feel
Excursions Similans, Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay Koh Tao, Ang Thong, Full Moon Party
For families More options, kids' activities Quieter, but fewer options

Now let's dig into each point in detail.

Beaches: variety vs intimacy

Phuket has over 30 beaches for every taste: from wide and bustling (Patong, Karon) to secluded coves (Freedom Beach, Banana Beach). I did a full rundown in my article on the best beaches in Phuket — with a TOP-12 list and photos. The west coast means sunsets, low-season surfing, and lively beach bars. The east coast offers calm water and mangrove forests.

Samui has fewer beaches — around 10-12 — but they have their own charm. Chaweng is the main one and the liveliest. Lamai is a bit quieter. Maenam and Bophut are cozy, with a fishing village atmosphere. The sand on Samui is slightly more golden and coarser than on Phuket.

Verdict: if variety matters to you — Phuket. If you want one favorite beach you visit every day — Samui.

Prices: which is cheaper?

Phuket is on average 10-20% cheaper than Samui across key expenses. The reason is simple: more competition. Phuket has hundreds of hotels, thousands of restaurants and landlords — they have to compete for your business.

Expense Phuket Samui
Condo with pool (month) 15,000-25,000 THB 18,000-30,000 THB
Lunch at a Thai cafe 80-150 THB 100-180 THB
Motorbike rental (month) 3,000-5,000 THB 3,500-6,000 THB
Flight from Bangkok from 1,200 THB (budget airlines) from 3,500 THB (Bangkok Airways)
Thai massage (hour) 300-400 THB 350-500 THB

The difference is especially noticeable with flights. Samui's airport is owned by Bangkok Airways — it's essentially a monopoly, and Bangkok-Samui tickets cost 2-3 times more than Bangkok-Phuket.

Verdict: Phuket is cheaper, especially for flights and accommodation.

Infrastructure: city vs village

Phuket is essentially a small city with a population of nearly 400,000. It has everything: shopping malls (Central Festival, Central Floresta, Jungceylon), international hospitals (Bangkok Hospital Phuket, Siriroj), international schools, big supermarkets (Makro, Lotus's, Big C). For anyone planning a long stay, this is critically important.

Samui is a smaller island with more modest infrastructure. There's Central Festival Samui, but the selection is smaller. There's one major hospital — Bangkok Hospital Samui. Serious medical cases require a flight to Bangkok or Phuket. That said, the shops and restaurants are perfectly decent.

Verdict: for long-term living and families with kids — Phuket is clearly more convenient.

Nightlife: Patong vs Chaweng

If nightlife matters to you — both islands offer it, but on different scales.

Patong (Phuket) is Bangla Road: dozens of clubs, bars, nightlife bars, and discos. The scale is impressive — from Illuzion (one of the largest clubs in Southeast Asia) to intimate cocktail bars. The party goes every night, yet you can live 10 minutes from Patong and not hear a thing.

Chaweng (Samui) is the main party street, but much more compact. A handful of bars, a couple of clubs — the vibe is more village party than city nightclub. For some, that's a plus — less flashy and more laid-back.

Full Moon Party — the legendary full-moon party on Koh Phangan, easily reachable from Samui (40 minutes by ferry). It's a unique experience that Phuket simply doesn't have.

Verdict: big nightlife scene — Phuket. Full Moon and intimate parties — Samui.

Nature and atmosphere

Phuket is an island of contrasts. It has bustling Patong and tranquil Nai Harn, jungle in the center and modern neighborhoods. You can work at a coworking space in the morning, stroll along the beach at noon, and have dinner at a rooftop restaurant in the evening — all within a 20-minute radius.

Samui is above all about the authentic tropical island atmosphere. Coconut palms, red dirt paths, a slower pace of life. Fewer high-rises, more nature all around. Waterfalls, viewpoints, temples — everything is compact and close by.

Verdict: want energy and variety — Phuket. Want to slow down and unplug — Samui.

Excursions: where can you go

From Phuket, you have access to some of the best excursions in Thailand. Similans and Phi Phi are two world-class destinations. Plus Phang Nga Bay with its limestone karsts, Racha islands for diving, and Koh Yao Noi for peace and quiet. A complete overview of all excursions is in our full guide.

From Samui — Ang Thong National Park (stunning nature), Koh Tao (one of the best dive sites in the world), Koh Phangan (Full Moon Party + wild beaches). Snorkeling and diving at Koh Tao is top-tier, especially for beginners.

Verdict: both locations give access to amazing excursions, but Phuket offers more options.

Which island is for whom?

Phuket is right for you if:

Samui is right for you if:

Why not both?

My advice: if time allows — visit both. Two weeks on Phuket plus a week on Samui (or the other way around) is the perfect format. A Phuket-to-Samui flight costs from 2,500 THB, flight time is 1 hour. That way you'll see two completely different sides of Thailand.

My final verdict

I live on Phuket and I chose it deliberately. The deciding factors for me were: a convenient airport with direct flights, developed infrastructure, a huge selection of beaches and excursions, and an active expat community.

But if I were coming for a 10-14 day trip just to relax and recharge, I'd probably pick Samui. It has that island magic that Phuket has partly lost due to large-scale development.

At the end of the day, there's no bad choice here. Both islands are Thailand at its finest. Just don't make the typical tourist mistakes, and your trip will be great wherever you end up.
