Snorkeling & Diving in Phuket: Best Spots, Prices, Tips for Beginners
The Andaman Sea is one of the most beautiful places for underwater adventures in Southeast Asia. After five years of living in Phuket, I've tried dozens of snorkeling tours and about a dozen dive sites, and I can say honestly: the underwater world here is worth every minute and every baht. In this article, I'll tell you where to go, how much to pay, and how to get the most out of your dives -- whether you're a complete beginner or a certified diver.
Why Phuket is great for snorkeling and diving
Phuket is a convenient starting point for trips to Thailand's best underwater locations. Boats depart from here to the Similan Islands, Phi Phi, Racha Yai and Racha Noi, Coral Island, and remote dive sites like Hin Daeng. Visibility in the high season reaches 30 meters, and water temperature stays at 28-30 °C year-round. A mask and snorkel -- that's all you need for your first taste of the underwater world.
You'll find manta rays, reef sharks, sea turtles, cuttlefish, clownfish, and hundreds of coral species. For divers, there are wrecks (sunken ships), underwater pinnacles, and caves. All of this is within 1-3 hours by boat from Chalong or Rassada pier.
Best snorkeling spots near Phuket
Similan Islands
The undisputed champion. Crystal-clear water, vibrant living corals, and fish that aren't afraid of people. The Similans are open only from October 15 to May 15 -- the national park is closed the rest of the year. It takes about 1.5 hours by speedboat from Phuket (from Tap Lamu pier). A day tour costs 2,000-3,500 THB (roughly $55-$95). I covered the detailed comparison of routes in my article Similans vs Phi Phi: Which to Choose.
Racha Islands (Racha Yai and Racha Noi)
My personal favorite for calm snorkeling with great visibility. Racha Yai is just 40 minutes by speedboat from Chalong. You'll find shallow bays with white sand, turtles, and reef fish. Racha Noi is a bit farther but offers better chances of seeing mantas. A full-day tour costs 1,500-2,500 THB.
Phi Phi Islands
The famous islands with Maya Bay. Snorkeling here is good, but during high season it gets crowded. I recommend booking a tour with an early departure -- 6:00 AM, when most tourists are still sleeping. Cost: 1,800-3,000 THB. Check out the full excursion guide in my Phuket excursions guide.
Coral Island (Koh He)
The closest option -- just 15 minutes by boat from Chalong. The corals are simpler, but it's convenient for families with kids and anyone who doesn't want to spend the whole day traveling. Price: 1,000-1,500 THB.
Snorkeling right from Phuket's beaches
If you don't want to go anywhere, try the headland between Kata and Kata Noi beaches, the southern end of Nai Harn, or the rocks at Ao Sane beach. Visibility isn't as good as at the islands, but you can still spot sea urchins, parrotfish, and even moray eels. More about beaches in my article best beaches in Phuket.

Message usDiving in Phuket: for beginners and experienced divers
Discover Scuba Diving -- your first dive
If you've never dived with scuba gear before, the Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) program is the perfect start. You don't need any certification: an instructor will give you a 30-minute briefing in a pool or shallow water, then take you down to 6-12 meters. Cost: 3,500-5,000 THB ($95-$135) for one dive, usually including transfer and lunch.
I recommend doing your intro dive at Racha Yai -- calm water, good visibility, and it's not far. Many dive centers in Phuket offer DSD with English-speaking instructors -- just ask when booking.
PADI Open Water certification
If one dive gets you hooked (and it often does), you can complete the PADI Open Water Diver course in 3-4 days. Price: 12,000-16,000 THB. After that, you'll be able to dive independently to 18 meters anywhere in the world. Phuket has some of the most affordable training prices in Asia.
Fun diving for certified divers
If you already have a certification, a fun dive with two dives runs 3,000-4,000 THB. A full-day trip with three dives costs 4,500-6,000 THB. Prices vary depending on the dive site and boat type.
Best dive sites around Phuket
Shark Point (Hin Musang)
Three underwater pinnacles covered in soft corals. You're almost guaranteed to see leopard sharks resting on the bottom. Depth: 5-24 meters, suitable for all levels. About an hour by boat from Phuket.
King Cruiser Wreck
An 85-meter ferry that sank in 1997. Wreck diving with abundant marine life: groupers, barracudas, lionfish. Depth: 12-33 meters, recommended for Advanced certified divers and above.
Hin Daeng and Hin Muang
Remote dive sites (3-4 hours by boat or liveaboard), but this is genuinely world-class diving. Underwater walls covered in soft corals, mantas, whale sharks (if you're lucky). Depth goes to 60+ meters. Usually included in 2-3 day liveaboard programs.
Anemone Reef
A pinnacle completely covered in anemones -- it looks like an underwater garden. Lots of clownfish, moray eels, and lionfish. A great spot for underwater photography. Depth: 5-26 meters.
Seasonality: when is the best time to dive
The ideal season is November through April. During this time, visibility reaches 25-30 meters, the sea is calm, and rain is rare. The Similan Islands are only accessible during this period.
But you can dive in the low season too (May-October). Racha Yai and dive sites off Phuket's southern coast operate year-round. Visibility is a bit lower (10-15 meters), but prices drop by 20-30% and there are far fewer people. Plankton attracts whale sharks and mantas -- so the low season has its own appeal for divers.

What to bring
- Rash guard or lycra top -- protection from jellyfish and sunburn. Even in warm water, your back will burn after an hour in the sun.
- Oxybenzone-free sunscreen -- regular sunscreens kill corals. Look for "reef safe" on the label.
- Underwater camera or waterproof phone case -- waterproof cases are sold everywhere for 200-300 THB, but quality is hit or miss. Better to buy a decent one in advance.
- Motion sickness pills -- if you get seasick, take Dramamine 30 minutes before boarding the boat.
- Your own mask -- not essential, but much more comfortable than rental masks, which often fog up and leak.
What NOT to do: safety rules
- Don't touch the corals -- they're living organisms. A single touch can kill coral that took decades to grow. Plus, damaging coral in Thailand carries a fine of up to 100,000 THB.
- Don't feed the fish -- bread and rice are harmful to marine life and disrupt the ecosystem.
- Don't stand on the bottom in coral zones -- use your fins and swim horizontally.
- Don't dive alone -- even if you're an experienced swimmer, the buddy system saves lives.
- Don't fly for 24 hours after diving -- the pressure change can cause decompression sickness.
- Don't drink alcohol before diving -- it increases the risk of nitrogen narcosis and impairs judgment.
How to choose a dive center
There are dozens of dive centers in Phuket. Here's what to look for:
- Certification -- look for centers with PADI 5 Star or SSI Diamond licenses. This guarantees safety standards.
- Language -- if English isn't your first language, check in advance whether they have instructors who speak yours. Phuket has instructors speaking many languages.
- Group size -- smaller is better. Ideally no more than 4 people per instructor.
- Equipment condition -- inspect the regulator and BCD before your dive. Don't hesitate to ask for a replacement.
- Reviews -- check Google Maps and TripAdvisor, not just the company's website.
My personal advice
If you're visiting Phuket for the first time and choosing between snorkeling and diving -- start with a snorkeling tour to Racha Yai or the Similans. It'll give you a feel for the underwater world without any stress or preparation. If you enjoy it, come back for Discover Scuba Diving. And if you're truly hooked, go for the PADI Open Water certification: Phuket is one of the best places in the world to learn diving thanks to warm water, great visibility, and affordable prices.
