Internet & SIM Cards in Phuket: Plans, Wi-Fi, eSIM Guide 2026

Thai operator SIM cards and a smartphone with mobile internet in Phuket

Being without internet on the island is like being without hands. Navigation, translator apps, ride-hailing, booking excursions, staying in touch with family -- everything requires a stable connection. I live in Phuket and over the years I've tried every option: from airport SIM cards to activating an eSIM while still on the plane. In this guide, I'll cover which carrier is best, where to buy a SIM, how much mobile internet costs, and where to find decent Wi-Fi on the island.

The Three Main Thai Carriers

Thailand has three major mobile carriers. Each one offers solid coverage in Phuket, but there are nuances.

AIS -- the country's largest carrier with the widest 5G coverage. In Phuket, AIS works reliably almost everywhere: from central areas to remote beaches on the north end of the island. It's been my main carrier for three years now, and I have very few complaints.

TrueMove H -- the second-largest carrier, owned by the CP Group conglomerate. After merging with DTAC in 2023, the network improved significantly. TrueMove is especially good if you frequently use TrueID and other services in the True ecosystem. Coverage in Phuket is excellent, with speeds comparable to AIS.

DTAC (now part of True) -- technically the DTAC brand still exists as a True sub-brand. DTAC Happy Tourist SIM cards are still sold at airports and 7-Eleven stores. Coverage is identical to TrueMove since the networks have merged.

My advice: for tourists staying 1-2 weeks, the difference between carriers is minimal. Just grab whichever SIM you see first at the airport. For longer stays, I recommend AIS -- it's the most reliable in mountainous and remote areas.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Phuket

Phuket Airport

The most convenient option if you've just arrived in Phuket. Right after you exit the baggage claim area, you'll see booths for all three carriers. They're open 24/7 and staff speak English. The process takes 5-10 minutes: you just need your passport. The SIM is activated on the spot.

Airport prices are 15-20% higher than in town, but the difference is literally 50-100 THB ($1.50-$3). The upside is you walk out of the airport with working internet, can call a Grab taxi, and pull up a map right away.

7-Eleven and Mini-marts

There's a 7-Eleven on every corner in Phuket -- literally. Many stores sell tourist SIM cards in packages. They're cheaper than at the airport. The downside: not every cashier can help with activation, and sometimes you need to register through the carrier's app.

Official Carrier Stores

You'll find them in every major shopping mall: Central Phuket (Floresta and Festival), Jungceylon in Patong, Robinson in Phuket Town. Here you can get either a tourist package or a full contract (if you have a work permit). Staff will help set up your phone.

Mobile Internet Plans 2026

Below are the current tourist packages as of May 2026. Prices may vary slightly.

Carrier Package Duration Data Speed Price (THB / USD)
AIS Tourist SIM 8 days 30 GB (5G) up to 300 Mbps 299 / ~$8
AIS Tourist SIM Plus 15 days 50 GB (5G) up to 300 Mbps 599 / ~$16
TrueMove Tourist SIM 8 days 30 GB (5G) up to 300 Mbps 299 / ~$8
TrueMove Tourist SIM Max 15 days Unlimited (5G) up to 300 Mbps 699 / ~$19
DTAC Happy Tourist SIM 8 days 30 GB (4G/5G) up to 150 Mbps 299 / ~$8
DTAC Happy Tourist SIM 30D 30 days 50 GB (4G/5G) up to 150 Mbps 799 / ~$22
AIS Monthly (local) 30 days Unlimited (5G) up to 500 Mbps 699 / ~$19
TrueMove Monthly (local) 30 days Unlimited (5G) up to 500 Mbps 649 / ~$18

Note: local (non-tourist) plans require registering a SIM with your passport. "Unlimited" usually means speeds are throttled after a certain threshold (100-200 GB).

eSIM: Get Online Before You Land

eSIM is a great option for those who want to step off the plane already connected. No booth to find, no physical SIM slot needed. Works on most modern smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20+, Google Pixel 4+).

Best eSIM Providers for Thailand

Airalo -- the most popular service. The "Thailand" package for 7 days / 10 GB costs about $8. They offer packages up to 30 days and 50 GB. Setup takes 2 minutes through the app. Uses the AIS network.

Holafly -- unlimited data is the main advantage. 7 days unlimited costs about $19, 15 days about $34. Speeds are good, but may be throttled during peak hours. Runs on the TrueMove network.

eSIM from the carriers themselves -- AIS and TrueMove sell eSIMs directly through their apps and websites. This is the best-value option, but may require a Thai phone number for registration.

My advice: for a short trip (up to 2 weeks), Airalo is the ideal choice for value. For a month or longer, buy a physical SIM and sign up for a local plan.

Wi-Fi in Phuket: Where to Find Free Internet

Wi-Fi is available almost everywhere in Phuket, but quality varies widely.

Hotels and guesthouses. 95% of hotels include free Wi-Fi. In 4-5 star hotels, speeds are typically 50-100 Mbps. In budget guesthouses, 10-30 Mbps -- enough for social media and video calls.

Cafes and restaurants. Most cafes have Wi-Fi; just ask the waiter for the password. Average speed is 20-50 Mbps. Chain coffee shops have especially good internet: Starbucks, Amazon Cafe, Pacamara.

Shopping malls. Central Phuket, Jungceylon, Robinson -- all have free Wi-Fi. Registration via SMS (a Thai SIM works) or social media login is required.

Coworking Spaces for Digital Nomads

Phuket has long been a hub for digital nomads. Here are the best coworking spaces I've personally tested:

Garage Society (Cherngtalay). The most stylish coworking space on the island. Fast internet (up to 500 Mbps), AC, coffee included. Day pass -- 450 THB (~$12), monthly -- 6,500 THB (~$180). Address: 5/28 Lagoon Road, Cherngtalay.

Hatch Coworking (Kata). A cozy spot near the beach. Wi-Fi speed 200-300 Mbps. Day pass -- 350 THB (~$10), monthly -- 5,000 THB (~$140). Address: 67/5 Ket Kwan Rd, Kata.

Phuket CoWork Club (Rawai). A budget-friendly option with a great community. Speed 150-200 Mbps. Day pass -- 250 THB (~$7), monthly -- 4,000 THB (~$110). Address: Saiyuan Rd, Rawai.

Bayshore Cowork (Chalong). Spacious hall with a dedicated call zone. Speed 300 Mbps. Day pass -- 400 THB (~$11), monthly -- 5,500 THB (~$150). Address: 51/16 Chao Fa West Rd, Chalong.

If you're considering a longer stay, I also recommend reading about renting a villa in Phuket -- many condos and villas now have fiber optic internet wired directly to the room.

Home Internet: Fiber Optic for Long-term Residents

If you're planning to live in Phuket for several months, it's worth getting a wired connection. The main providers are 3BB, AIS Fibre, and TrueOnline.

Fiber optic prices in 2026:

Provider Speed Price/mo (THB / USD) Notes
3BB 300/300 Mbps 590 / ~$16 Most stable ping
AIS Fibre 500/500 Mbps 699 / ~$19 Bonuses for AIS Mobile subscribers
TrueOnline 500/500 Mbps 599 / ~$16 Frequent promos for new customers
3BB 1 Gbps 990 / ~$27 For streamers and heavy workloads

Installation is usually free with a 12-month contract, or a one-time fee of 1,500-2,000 THB for setup. The speeds are real -- I personally measure 450+ Mbps on my AIS Fibre 500 plan.

VPN: Do You Need One in Phuket?

Short answer -- recommended, but not critical. Thailand doesn't block Western social media or messaging apps: WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, and YouTube all work without restrictions.

When a VPN is actually useful:

Tried-and-tested VPNs I recommend: NordVPN, Surfshark (most budget-friendly), Mullvad (for the privacy-conscious). All work reliably in Thailand.

Useful Apps for Staying Connected

Besides the usual messaging apps, these are worth installing in Thailand:

Common Tourist Mistakes with Connectivity

Over the years of living on the island, I've seen the same blunders over and over. Don't repeat these typical tourist mistakes:

Bottom Line: My Perfect Connectivity Recipe

For a 1-2 week tourist: Airalo eSIM before departure + free hotel Wi-Fi. Budget: $8-$15.

For a snowbird staying 1-3 months: AIS SIM card with the unlimited 5G monthly plan for 699 THB. Add home internet from 3BB or AIS Fibre if needed.

For a long-term digital nomad: a combo of home fiber (AIS Fibre 500 Mbps) + unlimited AIS mobile as backup. A coworking membership for a change of scenery. Total -- about 1,500 THB/month (~$40) for reliable internet everywhere.

Internet in Phuket is one of those things that pleasantly surprises people. It's fast, cheap, and coverage is excellent. The main thing is don't overpay for roaming and don't hesitate to ask locals if something's unclear.
