Healthcare in Phuket: Hospitals, Insurance, Pharmacies
Over four-plus years in Phuket, I've visited doctors dozens of times -- both for myself and helping friends and followers. Healthcare here is excellent, but there are nuances worth knowing in advance. In this article -- everything about hospitals, insurance, pharmacies, and prices: no fluff, only verified information.
Best Hospitals in Phuket
Bangkok Hospital Phuket -- #1 for Foreigners
This is the island's flagship hospital with international JCI (Joint Commission International) accreditation. They treat everything here -- from a cold to complex surgeries. Equipment is on par with the best European clinics: MRI, CT, modern laboratories, 24/7 intensive care.
The main advantage is multilingual coordinators. You don't need to explain your symptoms in broken English -- a staff member will translate everything to the doctor. I personally came here with a broken finger: consultation, X-ray, splint, and painkillers -- everything took 2 hours, costing 4,500 baht (~$130) without insurance.
Prices: general practitioner visit -- 1,500-2,000 baht, specialist -- 2,000-3,000 baht, X-ray -- 1,000-2,500 baht, blood test (general) -- 800-1,500 baht, MRI -- 12,000-18,000 baht. Hospital stay -- from 15,000 baht/day.
Address: 2/1 Hongyok Utis Road, Phuket Town. Phone: 076-254-425 (24/7).
Vachira Phuket Hospital -- Public Hospital
Phuket's main government hospital. Prices are 3-5 times lower than Bangkok Hospital, but there's less comfort: queues, shared wards, doctors often don't speak English. I went here for blood tests -- everything was professional, but I had to wait 3 hours.
Vachira is suitable for non-urgent cases and for those looking to save money. GP visit -- 300-500 baht, blood test -- 200-500 baht. For emergencies, it's better to go to Bangkok Hospital -- it's faster.
Address: Yaowarat Road, Phuket Town. Phone: 076-361-234.
Dibuk Hospital -- The Golden Middle
A small private hospital in Phuket Town. Prices are lower than Bangkok Hospital but higher than the government one. No queues, pleasant staff, some doctors speak English. Good for simple visits: cold, allergies, minor injuries.
Prices: visit -- 800-1,500 baht. Address: Dibuk Road, Phuket Town.

Message usInsurance: Which to Get and Why
Let me be blunt: going to Phuket without insurance is insanity. I've seen cases where people got into scooter accidents and received bills of 300,000-500,000 baht ($8,500-$14,300). Without insurance, that's a catastrophe. With good insurance -- one phone call to your provider, and they pay everything directly.
Choosing Insurance
For tourists (up to 30 days): get a policy with at least $50,000 coverage. Cost: $50-100 for two weeks. Reputable providers: World Nomads, Allianz, Safety Wing. Be sure your policy covers:
- Scooter/motorbike riding (often excluded by default -- look for a clause covering motorcycles under 50cc or active sports)
- Sunburn and heat stroke (yes, some insurers exclude this)
- Emergency dental
- Medical evacuation (repatriation)
For long-term stays: I use Safety Wing international insurance -- $45/month, global coverage including Thailand. An alternative is Pacific Cross Thailand, a local insurer with solid coverage from 15,000 baht/year.
How to Use Your Insurance
When visiting a hospital, call your insurance company (number on your policy) -- they'll contact the hospital and confirm payment. This is called a "Guarantee of Payment." At Bangkok Hospital, the process is well-established -- they work with all major insurers. If the hospital isn't in the direct billing network, you pay upfront and submit a claim for reimbursement.
Pharmacies in Phuket
There are plenty of pharmacies in Phuket, divided into two types: chain and local.
Chain Pharmacies
Boots -- British chain, found in Central Phuket and Jungceylon. Wide selection, clear pricing, English-speaking pharmacists. Prices slightly above average, but quality is guaranteed.
Fascino -- Thai chain, found in almost every major store. Good selection of Thai and imported medicines. Prices lower than Boots.
Local Pharmacies
Small pharmacies on every corner -- the cheapest option. Pharmacists usually understand basic English and can suggest medication based on symptoms. Antibiotics, painkillers, antihistamines -- all sold without prescription (except controlled and narcotic substances).
Useful Medicines to Buy
Tiger Balm -- for muscle pain, 50-80 baht. Ya Dom -- Thai nasal inhaler for congestion, 20 baht, Thais always carry one. Tylenol -- paracetamol, 30-50 baht. Loperamide -- for diarrhea, 30 baht. Antihistamines (Cetirizine, Loratadine) -- for allergies, 20-50 baht per blister.
Dentistry in Phuket
Dentistry is one of the reasons people fly to Thailand specifically for dental treatment. Quality is on par with Europe, prices are 3-5 times lower. I had cleaning, a filling, and a crown done here -- 100% satisfied.
Best clinics: Phuket Dental Signature (Patong) -- modern clinic with multilingual managers. Phuket International Dental Center -- near Bangkok Hospital. Sea Smile Dental Clinic (Patong) -- popular with expats.
Approximate prices: cleaning -- 800-1,500 baht, filling -- 1,000-3,000 baht, extraction -- 1,500-3,000 baht, crown (zirconia) -- 10,000-15,000 baht, veneers -- 8,000-15,000 baht each, implant -- 35,000-60,000 baht.
Emergency Services
Emergency number: 1669. An ambulance will arrive free of charge and take you to the nearest hospital. Response time: 15-30 minutes depending on the area.
Bangkok Hospital: 076-254-425 -- 24/7 hotline. You can call for their own ambulance, which will take you directly to Bangkok Hospital.
Tourist Police: 1155 -- will help with translation and coordination in emergency situations.
My advice: save these numbers to your phone as soon as you arrive. Write down your insurance company's number and policy number on a separate piece of paper in your wallet -- if your phone breaks, you'll still have the information.
Personal Experience: 5 Hospital Visits
Broken finger (Bangkok Hospital). Fell off a scooter at low speed. Consultation, X-ray, splint, and painkillers -- 4,500 baht. Insurance reimbursed fully. Total time -- 2 hours.
Food poisoning (Vachira). Decided to save money and went to the public hospital. IV drip, medication -- 800 baht. Waited 2.5 hours, but they fixed me up.
Jellyfish sting (pharmacy). Jellyfish burn at the beach. Walked into a pharmacy -- the pharmacist gave me antihistamine and hydrocortisone cream. 150 baht, all gone in 2 days.
Teeth cleaning (Dental Signature). Professional cleaning + examination -- 1,200 baht. Like the best clinics back home, but cheaper.
Covid (Bangkok Hospital). Test + examination + medication -- 3,500 baht. Insurance covered it. Doctor spoke English, coordinator spoke multiple languages.
