Phuket Trip Budget 2026: How Much Money to Bring

Thai baht, calculator, and notebook for planning a Phuket vacation budget

"How much money should I bring to Phuket?" -- the number one question I get asked before trips. And the answer depends on how you like to vacation. You can get by on 2,000 baht a day and have a great time, or spend 10,000+ and still want more. I've lived in Phuket over four years and know current prices for everything: from noodles at a market stall to a villa with a pool. Here's an honest breakdown for 2026.

Three Budget Levels

All calculations are per person per day, excluding flights. Exchange rate as of May 2026: 1 USD is approximately 35 baht.

Budget: 2,000-3,000 baht/day ($57-86)

Doable if you're fine with simple accommodation and local food. Accommodation: hostel or budget guesthouse (500-1,000 baht/night). Food: street food and local eateries (300-500 baht/day). Transport: public or scooter rental (250 baht/day). Excursions: 1-2 per trip. Minimal alcohol.

Mid-range: 4,000-6,000 baht/day ($114-171)

Comfortable vacation without luxury. Accommodation: 3-star hotel with pool (1,500-2,500 baht/night). Food: mix of street food and restaurants (800-1,200 baht/day). Transport: scooter or occasional Bolt (300-500 baht/day). Excursions: 3-4 per trip. Bar a couple times a week.

Comfort: 8,000+ baht/day ($229+)

Full vacation without limits. Accommodation: 4-5 star or pool villa (3,000-8,000+ baht/night). Food: restaurants and beach clubs (2,000-4,000 baht/day). Transport: taxi or car rental (500-1,500 baht/day). Excursions: premium (private boat to Phi Phi, yacht). Unlimited bars and entertainment.

For 30-day stays, budget and mid-range levels cost less than 30x the daily rate because long-term accommodation and scooter rental significantly reduce the daily average.

Exchanging Money in Phuket

Best option: exchange booths. SuperRich, P.N. Exchange, CIMB Exchange -- rates 3-5% better than banks, 10-15% better than the airport. Best booths: Rat-U-Thit Road in Patong, Phuket Road in Phuket Town. Open 9:00-21:00.

ATMs. Available everywhere, accept Visa/Mastercard. Thai bank fee: 220 baht per withdrawal (fixed, regardless of amount). Plus your bank's fee. Tip: withdraw the maximum per transaction (usually 20,000-30,000 baht) to minimize the percentage hit.

What NOT to do: don't exchange at the airport (10-15% worse rates), don't exchange at hotels (even worse), don't carry large amounts of cash.

Seasonal Pricing

High season (November-April): maximum prices. Hotels 30-80% more expensive than low season. December-January (holiday period) is peak: prices jump 2-3x, book 2-3 months ahead.

Low season (May-October): 30-50% discounts on accommodation, cheaper tours, emptier beaches. Rain comes 1-2 hours/day (usually after lunch), rest of the time is sunny. Water and air temperature same 28-32C. My honest recommendation: low season is the best time to visit for value.

10 Money-Saving Tips

1. Book accommodation through Agoda (not Booking) -- for Asia, Agoda is almost always cheaper.

2. Eat at local Thai eateries. A plate of rice with two dishes: 40-60 baht. Same thing at a tourist restaurant: 200-300 baht.

3. Rent a scooter if you can ride. 250 baht/day vs 500-1,000 baht per taxi ride.

4. Buy water at 7-Eleven (7-10 baht for 1.5L), not on the beach (40-60 baht).

5. Buy fruit at local markets, not tourist shops. Mango: 40-60 baht/kg at market vs 100-150 in tourist areas.

6. Get massages at places on the second or third street back from the beach. 250-300 baht vs 400-500 beachfront. Same quality.

7. Book excursions online 1-2 days ahead, not through your hotel. Savings: 30-50%.

8. Use Bolt, not tuk-tuks. Tuk-tuk Patong to Karon: 400 baht. Bolt: 150 baht. Same route.

9. Travel in low season (May-October) -- save 30-50% on everything.

10. For 2+ week stays, rent a condo instead of a hotel. Having a kitchen means you can make breakfast and save 200-300 baht/day.
