Phuket in August 2026: Weather, Prices, Things to Do

Phuket in August — empty Karon Beach in the low season

In brief: August in Phuket is the peak of low season and the cheapest hotel prices of the year. Air temperature is 31°C during the day, 25°C at night, sea water 28°C. It rains on 16 days of the month, but usually in the afternoon for 1–3 hours. Western beaches are for surfing, eastern ones for swimming. Tourist numbers are minimal, and five-star hotels are available at the price of a three-star in high season.

Phuket Weather in August

August is one of the wettest months, but "wet" in Phuket doesn't mean "rainy all day." The morning is almost always sunny, clouds roll in around 2:00 PM, then a short powerful downpour — and clear skies again. Some days have no rain at all. Others (less commonly) pour from morning to evening. But there are only 2–3 such days per month at most.

The temperature is stable — daytime never gets hotter than 33°C or cooler than 29°C. At night you'll still need air conditioning — 25°C at high humidity feels like 28°C.

From personal experience: August is slightly milder than September in terms of rainfall. Rain in August usually starts later — closer to 3:00–4:00 PM — and ends faster. You can get excellent stretches of 4–5 sunny days in a row when you forget it's officially rainy season. But then you might get hit with two days of heavy rain — that's normal.

What to Wear in August

Wardrobe for August in Phuket is about practicality, not style. At 85% humidity, regular clothes simply don't have time to dry. Here's what you'll actually need:

What's Open and What's Closed

Open: Phi Phi Islands (weather permitting), Phang Nga Bay, James Bond Island, all land-based activities (rafting, zipline, ATV), temples, night markets, shows, waterparks, diving at eastern sites.

Closed: Similan Islands (until November), some dive sites off the west coast, some beach clubs on Surin and Bang Tao operate on limited schedules.

Personal Experience: How I Spend August in Phuket

After more than four years on the island, I've stopped fearing August rains. On the contrary — I've grown to love this time. The island is empty, every restaurant has a table, roads have no traffic, and the nature is incredibly green. Waterfalls run at full force — if you haven't visited Bang Pae or Ton Sai waterfall, August is perfect for it.

My typical August day: breakfast at a Thai cafe (khao tom or rice porridge — from 40 baht), at 9:00 AM I'm at Ao Yon beach, swimming until noon. Lunch at a seafood restaurant in Rawai (fresh seafood at 200–400 baht per dish — in high season, the same portions cost double). After lunch — work or spa. If it rains — I head to Central Festival or a coworking space. By evening I'm off to the Phuket Town night market, where life buzzes under awnings regardless of the weather.

What I don't like about August: murky water for snorkeling, closed Similan Islands, and occasional cancellations of sea excursions. If the underwater world is your priority, come from November through April.
