Phuket in January 2026: Weather, Prices & Things to Do
In short: January in Phuket is the peak of the high season. Daytime temperature is 31°C, nighttime 23°C, sea water 28°C, and there are only 4 rainy days in the entire month. The sea is calm, all beaches and islands are open, including the Similans. This is the ideal month for beach holidays and sea excursions. The only downside is that hotel and flight prices are at their peak. I have been living in Phuket for four years and spend every January on the island — here is what to expect.
Air and Water Temperature in January
January is one of the most comfortable months in Phuket weather-wise. Daytime temperature holds steady at 31°C, occasionally rising to 32°C. At night it does not drop below 23°C — you can sleep with the balcony door open without air conditioning, although most tourists still prefer to use it.
The water temperature in the Andaman Sea is 28°C. Like a warm bath. You can spend hours in the water without feeling cold. Conditions are ideal for snorkelling and diving: visibility of 15–25 metres, weak currents.
Humidity in January is relatively low for the tropics — around 65–70%. The heat is felt without the mugginess. Compared to April (when humidity reaches 85%), breathing is noticeably easier. Compare January with other months in our overview: Phuket weather by month.
Rainfall: How Much Rain in January
On average, January sees 4 rainy days in Phuket. But a "rainy day" in the tropics is not what you might expect. Usually it is a short shower lasting 15–30 minutes, most often in the evening or at night. Half an hour later the sun is shining again and the asphalt dries in 20 minutes.
Total rainfall is about 35 mm for the month. For comparison, Moscow receives roughly the same amount in January, only in the form of snow spread across the entire month. Here it all comes at once and passes quickly.
Storms and strong winds are virtually non-existent in January. The sea is smooth as glass — especially on the east coast. The west coast occasionally gets a gentle swell, but red flags on beaches in January are very rare.
What Is Open and What Is Closed
In January absolutely everything is open in Phuket. It is peak season and the island is running at full capacity:

Best Beaches in Phuket in January
In January all beaches on the island are in excellent condition, but some are particularly good during this period:
Bang Tao — a 6-kilometre stretch of sand. In January the sea is calm with few waves; you can walk the entire length from Laguna to Surin. There are beach clubs (Catch, Xana) as well as wild sections without sun loungers.
Surin — a compact, picturesque beach with turquoise water. No waves in January, a gentle slope into the water. Restaurants and bars right on the sand. Ideal for couples.
Kata Noi — a small bay with fine white sand. Crystal-clear water and shade from the trees. Great for families with children — shallow and safe.
Nai Harn — on the south of the island. Surrounded by hills, beautiful sunsets. In January the sea is like a lake — you can swim far from shore.
Freedom Beach — a hidden beach reached by longtail boat for 200 baht. In January the boats run reliably. Few people, wild nature, snorkelling among the rocks.
Best Excursions in January
January is a top month for sea excursions. The sea is calm and all routes operate without cancellations:
Similan Islands — the number one excursion. A day trip costs from 2,500 baht. Underwater visibility up to 30 metres, turtles, reef sharks. Book 3–4 days ahead — groups fill up fast.
Phi Phi and Bamboo Island — a classic. Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, lunch on Phi Phi Don. From 1,700 baht by speedboat. In January the water in the lagoons is especially clear.
James Bond Island + cave canoeing — Phang Nga Bay. Stone pillars rising from the water, overhanging cliffs, monkeys. From 1,500 baht with lunch and canoeing.
Racha Yai + Racha Noi — islands for snorkelling and diving. 40 minutes from Phuket. White sand, shallow turquoise water. From 1,800 baht.
Elephant sanctuary — ethical interaction with elephants, no riding. Feeding and bathing. From 2,500 baht. In January the mornings are not too hot, so the elephants are more active.
Hotel Prices in January
January is the most expensive month in Phuket alongside December. The reason: New Year, Chinese New Year (late January to early February), and the mass influx of European tourists.
| Category | January (high season) | June (low season) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hostel / guesthouse | 800–1,500 ฿/night | 400–800 ฿/night | +80% |
| 3-star hotel | 2,500–4,000 ฿/night | 1,200–2,000 ฿/night | +100% |
| 4-star hotel | 4,000–8,000 ฿/night | 2,000–4,000 ฿/night | +80% |
| 5-star hotel | 8,000–20,000 ฿/night | 4,000–10,000 ฿/night | +90% |
| Villa with pool | 15,000–50,000 ฿/night | 8,000–25,000 ฿/night | +80% |
Tip: book your January hotel 2–3 months in advance. The best options sell out by November. If you arrive without a reservation, try Agoda — it has more "last minute" options for Thailand than Booking.
Events and Holidays in January
New Year (January 1–3) — restaurants host special dinners, beach parties at Patong and Bang Tao. Fireworks over the sea. Prices in the first days of January are still at their peak.
Children's Day (second Saturday of January) — a Thai holiday. Free events for children across the island: the military base opens its grounds, zoos offer discounts, shopping centres have entertainers.
Chinese New Year (late January – early February) — Phuket is one of the most "Chinese" islands in Thailand. Processions in Phuket Old Town, firecrackers, red lanterns, special restaurant menus. Worth visiting the historic centre.
Old Town Festival — every Sunday, Thalang Road becomes pedestrian with street food, music, and souvenirs. In January there are more people than usual, but the atmosphere is festive.
What to Pack for Phuket in January
January is a dry, sunny month, so packing is straightforward:
- Clothing: light cotton T-shirts, shorts, sundresses. For the evening, a thin long-sleeve shirt (for mosquitoes and temple visits)
- Footwear: sandals or flip-flops for the beach, trainers if you plan to hike to Big Buddha or the viewpoints
- Sun protection: SPF50 sunscreen (buy it locally at 7-Eleven — it is cheaper), a hat, sunglasses
- For the sea: snorkel mask and tube (can be bought for 300–500 baht), water shoes for rocky entries
- Electronics: waterproof phone case (100 baht at any market), power bank
- Just in case: compact umbrella, insect repellent (OFF spray from 7-Eleven)
- Documents: passport (60-day visa-free entry for many nationalities since 2024), travel insurance with at least $50,000 coverage, hotel booking confirmation
Practical Tips from a Local
Book in advance. January is peak season. Good hotels, Similan excursions, tables at popular restaurants — everything needs to be booked days ahead, and accommodation months in advance.
Rent a motorbike in the morning. In January demand for motorbike rentals is at its highest. Price is 300–400 baht/day for a Honda Click. Get one in the morning while there is still a choice. You will need an international driving licence (category A).
Go to the beach early. By 10:00 am popular beaches (Kata, Patong, Surin) fill up. Arrive at 7:30–8:00 am for an empty beach, soft light, perfect for photos and a peaceful swim.
Do not overlook the east coast. Everyone heads west (Patong, Karon, Kata), but the east side has quiet piers, mangrove forests, and crab markets with cheap seafood. Cape Panwa and Rawai are my favourite spots for dinner.
Stay hydrated. At 31°C with active sun, dehydration creeps up. Carry a water bottle. A litre of water at 7-Eleven costs 7–10 baht.
Bargain at the markets. Start at 50% of the first price. In January sellers know tourists will pay, but bargaining is part of the culture and they respect you for it.
Sunsets are on the west coast. Best spots: Promthep Cape, Surin Beach, the cliffside restaurant near Kata. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset — you will need to claim your spot.
