Phuket Weather by Month: Temperature, Rain & Best Time to Visit

Phuket weather overview — sunny beach and blue sky

Phuket weather determines everything about your trip — which beaches are safe for swimming, which islands are open, and how much you will pay for your hotel. After four years of living through every season on the island, I have tracked temperatures, rainfall, and sea conditions month by month.

The short version: November to April is the dry season (high season) with calm seas and blue skies. May to October is the monsoon season (low season) with afternoon rain, bigger waves, and dramatically lower prices. But the full picture is much more nuanced — each month has its own character.

Season Overview

High Season (November – April)

This is when most tourists visit. The southwest monsoon has ended, the sea is calm and clear, and rain is rare. Temperatures hover around 30–33°C with low humidity. West coast beaches — Patong, Karon, Kata, Surin — are at their best. All islands are open for excursions, including the Similans (open October 15 to May 15) and Koh Rok.

The trade-off: higher prices for hotels (30–50% more than low season), busier beaches, and the need to book popular excursions in advance — especially during Christmas and New Year.

Best months: February (driest, warm but not scorching), November (season just opened, crowds have not arrived yet), December (Christmas atmosphere, dry weather).

Low Season (May – October)

The southwest monsoon brings afternoon rainstorms, bigger waves on the west coast, and cloud cover. But this is not "bad weather" — mornings are often sunny, rain rarely lasts more than 1–2 hours, and the island turns lush and green.

Advantages are huge: hotel prices drop 30–50%, beaches are empty, restaurants give discounts, and there are no queues for anything. Many expats and long-term visitors consider this the best time to be in Phuket.

West coast beaches have red flags on many days — swimming can be dangerous due to rip currents. East coast and south coast beaches (Rawai, Nai Harn in calmer periods) remain swimmable. Island excursions to Phi Phi and James Bond Island still run daily.

Best months: May (monsoon is just starting, still many dry days), October (rain decreasing, prices at their lowest).

Shoulder Season

Late October and early November is a sweet spot: prices are still low, crowds haven't arrived, but the weather is rapidly improving. April is similar on the other end — hot, a few showers beginning, but still mostly dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Phuket?

February for the best weather (dry, warm, not too hot). November for the best value (season just opened, prices still reasonable, beaches empty). December–January if you want Christmas and New Year atmosphere but expect peak prices.

Is it worth visiting Phuket in the rainy season?

Absolutely. Rain typically falls in short afternoon bursts, mornings are sunny, and prices are 30–50% lower. The island is greener, less crowded, and many locals prefer this time of year. Just avoid swimming on west coast beaches with red flags. Read our low season guide for the full picture.

What should I pack for Phuket?

Light clothing, reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+), a hat, and waterproof sandals. In low season, add a light rain jacket. You do not need warm clothes — temperatures never drop below 25°C, even at night.

Does it rain every day in low season?

Not necessarily. Some days are completely dry. When it does rain, it is usually a 1–2 hour tropical downpour in the afternoon, after which the sky clears. All-day rain is rare except during occasional tropical storms in September.
